Do, you know how good your beard smells after a fresh application of beard oil? After how long it will get absorbed? When is it time to wash your face again? The answer depends on what type of beard oil you’re using and your skin and facial hair type.
To be honest, with most beard oils it is not necessary to wash your face after applying it. In fact, if you do rinse out the oil after applying it you won’t give your beard a chance to absorb it properly. The whole purpose of applying beard oil is so it can get absorbed and give your hair follicles the nutrients they need. This helps your beard feel softer and look shinier. If you wash off the beard oil, this absorption process will not happen.
If you insist on washing your face you should wait at least two to three hours after applying the beard oil. You must give the oil enough time to get completely absorbed by your hair follicles.
Should you wash your face after applying beard oil?
As we mentioned above, it is not necessary to wash your face after applying beard oil. But there are some cases where it is necessary.
The Viscosity of the beard oil
The viscosity of beard oil is the thickness of the oil – it can be thin, medium, or thick.
If the viscosity of the beard oil you’re using is quite thick, there may be a bit of residue left on your face. Your beard oil might not completely absorb into the facial hair and skin. Washing off excess beard oil residues will help out with this problem. In this case, it is necessary to wash your face after applying beard oil. Some carrier oils that have thick viscosity are coconut oil, argan oil, and olive oil.
Your hair and skin type
If you have very oily hair and skin, it is also necessary to wash off the beard oil. This will prevent your facial hairs from becoming too oily and having your skin pores clogged. This is why it’s necessary to wash your face after applying beard oil if you have oily hair or skin.
You feel irritated
This is another reason why you might want to wash your face after applying beard oil. If you apply the beard oil and feel some sort of irritation or stinging sensation, then there are some elements in this oil that irritate your skin.
In this case, you should immediately wash your beard and face. It is better to err on the side of caution rather than have a reaction that will not go away or get worse over time. Ao wash your face immediately after applying the beard oil if you have any sort of negative reaction.
This is why you should always do a patch test on your skin before using a product. A quick patch test will reveal if you have an allergic reaction to the product or not. If there is no redness, itching, or irritation after 24 hours then it means that you can safely use this product in the future.
If you have sensitive skin then it is best to use all-natural carrier oils without any additives – this way there’s a lower chance of having a negative reaction.
This is something else you have to consider. If you’re going outside soon you shouldn’t apply beard oil in the first place. The reason is simple – if you’re going to be in open spaces like the beach, park, or forest you don’t want all the dirt and stuff from these areas sticking to your beard.
If you’re going to a friend’s house for a get-together, or out with co-workers after work, then there’s no reason not to apply the oil since you will be in a closed space.
So if you have applied beard oil and you realize you have to go out soon, the best thing to do is simply wash your face. You can still apply beard oil when you get back home. But again, if you’re going to be outdoors for a long period of time or participate in any sort of activity that will require you to exert yourself or sweat a lot, please wash your face.
So, when should I wash my face after applying beard oil?
As we mentioned above, it is not necessary to wash your face after applying beard oil. But if you have to go outside or you feel irritated you should definitely wash your face immediately.
If the beard oil you have used has thick viscosity or your beard hair or face is oily then it is best to wash it after three to four hours to give it time to penetrate into the skin.
Finally, if nothing from the above applies to you and the oil doesn’t seem too thick then just wash your face like you normally do to remove dirt and pollution (ideally after you get out of the shower). Your beard oil will take care of the rest.
No matter how often you wash your face you should use a gentle beard wash that will not strip your skin of its natural oils.
As you already know when it comes to grooming and beards there is not a one-size-fits-all solution for how to take care of your facial hairs.
The same goes for washing your face after applying beard oil – it entirely depends on the skin type, hair type, and other factors we already mentioned.
